Ukraine-Russia: What Does Putin Want In Ukraine?

Ukraine-Russia: What Does Putin Want In Ukraine?

Vladimir Putin, a former KGB agent stationed in East Germany, has expressed regret over the Soviet Union’s demise and voiced his opposition to Europe’s post-Cold War security architecture.

As a result of months of military buildup and brinkmanship on its border with Ukraine, Russia invaded its former Soviet neighbour with a multi-pronged attack, threatening Europe and drawing the United States into the conflict.

Recent diplomatic efforts to avert a Russian invasion failed to ease tensions that had been building for months.
Since last year, Russia had consolidated its military presence around Ukraine, amassing tens of thousands of soldiers as well as equipment and artillery.
An escalation in the years-long conflict between Russia and Ukraine has triggered the greatest security crisis in Europe since the Cold War. The attacks by Russia on several parts of Ukraine raise the prospect of a dangerous showdown between Moscow and Western powers.

What’s the situation on the border?

On Thursday morning, several areas across Ukraine were bombarded after Russian President Vladimir Putin declared the start of a “special military operation” and threatened bloodshed unless Ukrainian forces laid down their weapons.
It followed months of speculation about what Moscow was planning with the troops it had massed on the Ukrainian border. Russian troops surrounded Ukraine on three sides, like a sickle, according to US and Ukrainian intelligence officials.
Ukrainian State Border Service reports that some of these forces began pouring across the border from the north, in Belarus, and from the south, in Crimea. Several cities, including the capital Kyiv, experienced explosions.

What has set the stage for the conflict?

Ukraine was a cornerstone of the Soviet Union until it voted overwhelmingly for independence in a democratic referendum in 1991, a move that proved fatal to the country’s decline as a superpower.
NATO expanded eastward after the collapse of the Soviet Union, incorporating most of the Eastern European nations that had been under Communist rule. The former Soviet Baltic republics Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania joined NATO in 2004. Russia crossed a red line when it announced that it would offer membership to Ukraine someday in the distant future.
The Russian president views NATO’s expansion as an existential threat, and the prospect of Ukraine joining NATO a hostile act — a view he invoked in a televised speech on Thursday, saying that Ukraine’s aspiration to join NATO was a grave danger to Russia.
Putin has emphasized in interviews and speeches that Ukraine is a part of Russia, culturally, linguistically, and politically.
Some of the mainly Russian-speaking population in Ukraine’s east agree with this sentiment, but the more nationalistic, Ukrainian-speaking population in the west has historically supported greater integration with Europe.

What does Putin want?

Putin wrote in July 2021 that Russians and Ukrainians were “one people” and that the West had corrupted Ukraine and stripped it of its Russian identity through a “forced change of identity.”
Exactly this type of historical revisionism was on full display in Putin’s emotional address to the nation on Monday, announcing his decision to recognize the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics while casting doubt on Ukraine’s sovereignty.
However, Ukrainians, who have in the last three decades sought closer ties with Western institutions like the European Union and NATO, have resisted the idea that they are little more than the West’s “puppet.”
A number of recent polls have shown that the majority of Ukrainians now favor joining the US-led transatlantic military alliance, despite Putin’s efforts to bring Ukraine back into Russia’s sphere.
The US and NATO received a list of security demands from Putin in December. Among those proposals was a guarantee that Ukraine will not join NATO, and that it will roll back its military footprint in Eastern and Central Europe, proposals the US and its allies have repeatedly rejected.

Jay Slater: Search Continues of British Teenager Missing on Spanish Island

(CTN News) – Following his attendance at a music event, British teenager Jay Slater went missing a week ago. The authorities on the Spanish island of Tenerife are still hunting for him.

A GoFundMe fundraising effort has been set up to aid in the search for Slater, 19, who went missing after attending the NRG event in the southern part of the island.

He was last heard between 8 and 9 a.m. local time (3-4 a.m. ET) on June 17. A friend of Slater’s called Lucy Mae spearheaded the effort, claiming to have left the event on Sunday before Slater.

According to the fundraiser, Jay Slater contacted her the next day at approximately 8.30 a.m. local time, telling her he was “lost in the mountains” and that his phone only had 1% battery left.

A map on the website indicates Jay Slater’s last known position, which is around 40 kilometers (25 miles) from the festival venue in the Teno Rural Park in northwest Tenerife. The fundraising claim states that Jay Slater informed Lucy Mae that he left the festival with two males he met and that they went to a far-off place together.

The Guardia Civil de Spain, responsible for the adolescent’s search, published a video on X showing police scouting arid, hilly terrain and swooping over steep ravines on a helicopter.

CTN has contacted the Guardia Civil for comments on the hunt. In the northern English county of Lancashire, where Jay Slater was born, police reported communicating with the Guardia Civil.

The Lancashire Police Force released a statement on Friday: “Although this case is outside the purview of UK policing, we have extended an offer of support to the Guardia Civil to see if they need any additional resources.”

“They have acknowledged that, as of right now, they are certain they have the resources they need, but that offer is still open, and they will get in touch with us if their assessment changes.”

The UK Foreign Office informed CNN in a statement on Monday that it is aware of Slater’s situation.

A spokesman said, “We are in contact with the local authorities and are supporting the family of a British man who is missing in Spain.” The NRG event stated Slater’s disappearance on Saturday.

The festival said on Instagram, “That such a devastating situation has arisen has deeply affected us all.”

“We are motivated by the tenacity and determination of Jay slater family members, who arrived in Tenerife under extremely trying circumstances, and we have been able to provide them with some practical support.”

A Spanish archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean off the west coast of Africa is called the Canary Islands, of which Tenerife is a part. Its mild environment all year round has made it a favorite vacation spot for a long time.

Following a string of travelers going missing in Greece’s oppressive heat is Slater’s disappearance.

The nearest monitoring station to Slater’s disappearance, which is situated at an airport in the southern part of the island, has recorded high temperatures in the mid-20s Celsius (upper-70s Fahrenheit), with lows in the upper teens Celsius (mid-60s Fahrenheit), according to CNN meteorologist Monica Garrett.

Garrett said, “There have been no reports of rain; conditions have been sunny with some occasional clouds.”

Boeing 737 MAX Fails FAA Audit, Whistleblower Found Dead

Published

on

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) examined Boeing’s 737 MAX production process after a fuselage panel blew off an Alaska Airlines jet in January, and 33 of 89 audits failed, according to The New York Times on Monday.

According to the New York Times, Boeing failed a check dealing with the component that blew off the jet, known as a door plug, in the extensive examination, citing an FAA presentation seen by the NYT.

The supplier Spirit AeroSystems, which manufactures the MAX fuselage, passed six of 13 audits and failed the rest, according to the report. Additionally, an audit at Spirit focusing on the door plug component revealed five faults and failed the one dealing with the component’s installation, according to the report.

The audit expressed concerns about the technicians who completed the job and discovered that the company “failed to determine the knowledge necessary for the operation of its processes,” according to the report.

Spirit also failed examinations involving a cargo door and the installation of cockpit windows, according to the report.

Based on the FAA audit, Boeing is continuing to implement immediate adjustments and formulating a plan to improve safety and quality, according to an emailed statement.

The FAA and Spirit AeroSystems did not immediately respond to Reuters’ requests for comment.

Earlier in the day, U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg stated that he expected Boeing to participate in the Justice Department and National Transportation Safety Board investigations into the 737 MAX 9 mid-air disaster on January 5.

The FAA’s Michael Whitaker stated that the agency and Boeing plan to establish the goals that the firm must reach in order to increase the MAX manufacturing pace over the next 30 days.

Last Monday, the government stated that it discovered “non-compliance issues in Boeing’s manufacturing process control, parts handling and storage, and product control”.

 Boeing 787 Dreamliner

Meanwhile, New Zealand’s Transport Accident Investigation Commission announced on Tuesday that it has seized the cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder of a Latam AM Airlines Boeing 787 following a mid-air mishap that injured around 50 persons.

According to local media sources, the aircraft’s abrupt drop in altitude caused passengers to fly into the cabin’s roof before descending back to the floor.

The airline did not identify the nature of the technical issue. According to the Sydney Morning Herald, the pilot said that his gauges went blank and he was unable to fly the jet.

There were no significant injuries, however seven of the 263 passengers and three of the nine crew members on Latam aircraft 800 were transported to the hospital after landing in Auckland.

According to the New Zealand accident investigator, Chilean officials said they had begun a probe into the flight and were collaborating with their investigations. The flight was en route from Sydney to Santiago, Chile, via Auckland.

A TAIC spokeswoman stated that given the incident on Monday’s Sydney-Auckland flight happened in international airspace, it was up to Chile’s accident investigation body, Direccion General de Aeronautica Civil (DGAC), to launch an investigation.

“TAIC is in the process of gathering evidence relevant to the inquiry, including seizing the cockpit voice and flight data recorders,” the agency said in a statement. The so-called “black boxes” will reveal further information about the flight’s course and communications between pilots.

The DGAC said in a statement that it was collaborating with TAIC on the probe. LatamTAM did not immediately answer to a question about whether it had delivered the black boxes to TAIC. Earlier on Tuesday, the airline stated that it will assist the relevant authorities with any investigations.

According to safety experts, the majority of aircraft accidents are caused by a complex combination of variables that must be thoroughly explored.

The Civil Aviation Authority of New Zealand said in a statement that it will cooperate with the probe if necessary.

The duration of cockpit recordings has resurfaced in the aviation industry, following the discovery that voice recorder data on the Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 MAX 9 jet that lost a panel mid-flight in January was rewritten.

Boeing Whistleblower

Boeing whistleblower found dead

In other Boeing News, a notable Boeing whistleblower, a former quality manager who expressed concerns about manufacturing methods at the company’s 787 Dreamliner factory in South Carolina, was found dead on Saturday of an alleged self-inflicted gunshot wound.

John Barnett, a whistleblower, was in Charleston for a deposition in a case in which he claimed Boeing retaliated against him for complaining about quality and safety.

Boeing has struggled with quality issues in both design and manufacture for years, most notably following the disasters of two Boeing 737 Max jets in 2018 and 2019, as well as when a fuselage panel blew off on a Max flight shortly after takeoff two months ago.

Mr. Barnett filed the complaint against Boeing with the U.S. Labor Department in 2017 under the AIR21 Whistleblower Protection Program, which shields employees of aircraft manufacturers who report information about airline safety issues. He quit the company that year.

The Charleston County Coroner’s Office confirmed the death, stating that it seemed to be “a result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.”

In a statement, the Charleston Police Department stated it was investigating the coroner’s findings. “Detectives are actively investigating this case and are awaiting the formal cause of death, along with any additional findings that might shed further light on the circumstances surrounding the death of Mr. Barnett,” the department stated in a statement.
